What is MOV

What is MOV?

Apple QuickTime Movie encoding specifications and data compression standards are implemented into video data that is stored in the MOV format, and video files saved in this format are appended with the .mov extension. Apple developed this proprietary set of video data encoding standards and compression specifications for digital movies and other video clips. These MOV files are also embedded with cross compatibility support, which means the video content of a .mov file can be viewed with digital video players designed for Mac platforms and Windows-based systems.

Applications that Open MOV Files

Apple QuickTime Player and VLC Media Player can be used to open and view the content of these MOV files in both Mac platforms and Windows-based computers, and Windows Media Player is also integrated with playback functionality for these .mov files. Followed:

1. Apple QuickTime Player

2. VideoLan VLC Media player

3. Microsoft Windows Media Player

Be careful not to rename the extension on .mov files. This will not change the file type. Only special video conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.
